TMJ - What is It and How Our West Hartford Chiropractor Help?

If you suffer from inexplicable clicking in the jaw, headaches, or even neck/shoulder pain, then it may be time to schedule an appointment with your West Hartford chiropractic team. Here at West Hartford Chiropractic, we specialize in the treatment and management of TMJ syndrome, a relatively common condition that isn't always successfully treated with traditional medical therapy alone. Fortunately, the right chiropractic care can make all the difference when it comes to alleviating one's TMJ symptoms and treating the condition at its source.

What is TMJ and What Are the Symptoms?

TMJ syndrome refers to a condition that affects the temporomandibular joint, which is located at the hinge of the jaw on either side. Specifically, this joint connects the lower jaw to the rest of the skull. Therefore, you rely on the smooth function of these joints every time you talk, chew, or otherwise open and close your mouth.

Unfortunately, because of how often this joint is used, it's not uncommon for problems to arise. Some people are simply born with a jaw that's slightly crooked, which can lead to pain on one or both sides of the jaw. Other causes of TMJ include trauma (such as a blow to the head), birth trauma, extensive dental work, or even wear and tear of the joints over time. Arthritis is also a common cause of TMJ, especially in seniors. However, TMJ syndrome can occur at just about any age.

So, how do you know if you have TMJ? The only way to know for sure is to see a professional, but there are some common telltale symptoms to be on the lookout for. These include:

  • involuntary locking of the jaw
  • clicking or popping of the jaw
  • headaches (with or without dizziness)
  • pain in the jaw, face, neck, or shoulders

If you've been experiencing some or all of these symptoms, you may have TMJ syndrome.

Treatment Options From Our West Hartford Chiropractor

When most people think of seeking treatment for TMJ syndrome, they typically don't think of chiropractors providing that treatment. However, you may be surprised at just what a strong relation there can be between chiropractic problems and TMJ pain. For this reason, chiropractic care is being used more and more often these days as a non-invasive option for treating TMJ syndrome.

Specifically, manual adjustments, trigger points, and massage therapy can be used to release muscle spasms while relieving pain. Furthermore, cold laser therapy has been proven effective in relieving pain and reducing inflammation, while bio-stimulation can increase tissue metabolism rates for improved healing. Acupuncture may also be effective in relieving TMJ pain, and bone density screenings may be recommended by your chiropractor for a more accurate treatment plan.
