Ultrasound

Therapeutic Ultrasound at West Hartford Chiropractic

Many of our patients at West Hartford Chiropractic are familiar with ultrasound. Ultrasound is an important part of chiropractic care that many of our patients appreciate. But if you are not familiar with ultrasound, here are a few things you need to know.

Therapeutic Ultrasound at West Hartford Chiropractic

Ultrasound at Your Chiropractor Office Isn't the Same Ultrasound Used for Medical Imaging

The ultrasound the doctor uses when you are pregnant or if you have a blood clot isn't the same machine used at West Hartford Chiropractic. The ultrasound you get at the hospital is diagnostic ultrasound. The ultrasound you get at the chiropractor office is therapeutic ultrasound. They use different frequencies and generate different kinds of energy in your body.

Ultrasound Therapy Complements Chiropractic Adjustment In Two Ways.

One of the ways chiropractic ultrasound benefits your body is deep heat. You can put a heating pad over a muscle if you want to relax it or increase circulation, but the heat from a heating pad is only going go down about one-half to one inch (1-2 cm). The vibrating crystal in the therapeutic ultrasound machine can generate heat that warms your body up to 2 inches (5 cm) deep.

The other benefit of ultrasound therapy is its rippling effect. Don't try this at home, but if you were to place the head of an ultrasound machine underwater, you could see the waves it generates. The vibration of your cells against each other generates heat, but the wave motion of the ultrasound also gets the circulation going through the treated tissue.

There Are Parts Of The Body That Your Chiropractor Won't Treat With Ultrasound.

Your chiropractor will not apply ultrasound on parts of your body where bones come close to your skin, such as your knees or your fingers. Those areas of the skin are particularly sensitive and you would experience burns if the ultrasound was applied there. Ultrasound isn't an all-over-your-body treatment.

Your chiropractor also won't treat you with ultrasound if you have a history of cancer. It's not a good idea to increase circulation to cancer cells. Even if your pain is in a part of your body distant from the site of your cancer, your chiropractor will keep you safe by using other treatment modalities.

For most of our patients, ultrasound at West Hartford Chiropractic is a great tool for relieving pain.

Most of our patients feel great after ultrasound treatment, but it's important to remember ultrasound is a tool for professionals, not a toy for home treatment. Make your appointment with West Hartford Chiropractic online or call us at (860) 232-5556.
